Timing Belts

In 2006 Alfa Romeo reduced the official timing belt change interval to the following:

-All twinspark engines - 3 years or 36,000 miles, or whichever is soonest.

-V6 & diesel engines - 5 years or 72,000 miles, or whichever is soonest, though we have seen many belts go just before that and recommend you have them changed at 4 years or 60,000 miles.

On the V6 and diesel engines we strongly recommend replacing the waterpump at the same time as these are a common failure point.

At Proalfa we always change the tensioners and carefully inspect any idlers not

supplied in the timing belt kits for signs of wear and tear.

*There is no labour charge to replace the spark plugs on any V6 timing belt - just the cost of the plugs

**The auxillary belt idlers (top and bottom) will be inspected and advised upon when the belt is being changed.

Why is it so important to change your timing belt?

Failure to replace your timing belt at the recommended schedule could cause the timing belt to break and cause internal engine damage resulting in expensive repairs.

How often should you change your timing belt?

Alfa Romeo recommend for Twinspark and JTS engines every 36,000 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first.

For Diesel and V6 engines Alfa Romeo recommend every 72,000 miles or 5 years. We recommend evry 60,000 miles for the V6 engines

What damage is caused when you have a timing belt failure?

-Damage could be caused to: Timing belt Tensioner, pulleys and water pump.
-Inlet and Exhaust valves make contact with pistons and bend.
-In some extreme cases pistons can become damaged, this will lead to an expensive repair.
-Contact between valves and pistons can cause flat spots on the bottom end bearings causing engine damage at a later date

Should you change the waterpump?

When a water pump fails, circulation of water in the engine stops, causing overheating and possible head gasket failure. it is effectively the same labour to replace a waterpump on its own as replacing a timing belt.

Why change the balancer shaft belt and the tensioner?

Because of the close proximity between the balancershaft belt and the timing belt, the balancershaft belt can become wedged, causing damage to the timing belt
